The products were harvested by the staff. Institute Director Dr. Mustafa Ünlü told reporters that each sapling yielded about 60 kilograms of product and that they were happy with the yield obtained.
Stating that they aim to introduce farmers to new species, Ünlü said "Our researchers are conducting trials on tropical fruits that can grow in the Mediterranean against the global climate change that has affected our country in recent years. The papaya we grew in this context has matured successfully. As the Institute, we are trying to grow products that will contribute to the national economy and be a 'lifeline' for our producers."
Süleyman Yalçın, a senior agricultural engineer who took part in the study, stated that the research also provides the determination of whether papaya will grow next to bananas or not, and gave the following information:
"Papaya is very similar to banana in terms of climatic conditions. The optimum temperature requirement is 21-33 Celsius. Papaya is damaged in sub-zero temperatures just like the banana plant. Since the environmental conditions required by the two products are similar, we planted the papaya in the banana greenhouse and achieved successful results. There can be more than 50 fruits on a papaya plant."
